Jacksonville, FL ยท Replacement & Installation

New shingle roofs for Jacksonville homes

Updated September 2026

Shingle is the roof on most Jacksonville houses, and the difference between a good one and a tired one is the system under and around the shingles. We install complete shingle systems, not just the part you can see.

Shingle Roof Installation, Jacksonville
In short

A shingle roof installation in Jacksonville, FL is a full system: tear-off, deck repair and re-nailing, underlayment, drip edge, flashing, starter strip, shingles and ridge vent, built to the Florida Building Code 8th Edition and inspected by the city. Most homes are done in one to two days, and architectural or high-wind rated lines are the usual choice.

What goes on the roof

A shingle roof is a system, not a color choice

Homeowners pick shingles by color and warranty. How the roof performs in a Jacksonville summer comes from the parts around them: a deck nailed to code, underlayment that seals at every fastener, metal drip edge at eaves and rakes, starter strips that let the first course seal down, and flashing at every wall and penetration.

We install those parts from one manufacturer's system where the warranty calls for it, and we ventilate the attic so the shingles are not baking from below as well as above.

Cost factors

What a new shingle roof costs in Jacksonville

$11,000 to $17,000Architectural shingle reroof, typical Jacksonville home. Market range reported here (2026-05); a planning figure, never our quote.
$375 to $450 per squareArchitectural shingles per roofing square (100 sq ft), Duval County. Market range reported here (2026-04); a planning figure, never our quote.

Roof size and pitch

Price follows roofing squares, and steep roofs need more safety setup and time.

Layers to remove

A second layer of old shingles means more labor and disposal.

Decking condition

Rotted sheathing found at tear-off is replaced per sheet.

Shingle line

Architectural is the baseline; impact-rated lines cost more per square.

Published local market figures, not our quote. We price after measuring the roof and checking the deck from the attic.

Architectural shingle roofs

Architectural, or dimensional, shingles are two laminated layers that give the roof depth and more weight per square than old three-tab. They are the default for Jacksonville reroofs because they carry higher wind ratings and longer manufacturer warranties for a modest step up in price. We install the main lines local suppliers stock from GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed.

Pick the color against the house in daylight, not from a brochure. A sample usually looks lighter on the roof than in your hand.

High-wind rated shingle systems

Roofer setting starter strip and nailing shingles in the nailing strip

A shingle's wind rating depends on the installation, not only the product. A high-wind system uses the manufacturer's starter strip at eaves and rakes, the specified nail count per shingle, and nails set in the nailing strip rather than above it. Get any of those wrong and the rating on the wrapper means little.

We follow the high-wind nailing pattern on every shingle roof we install, and the photos taken before the ridge goes on show the nailing to anyone who asks.

Impact-rated shingles

Impact-rated shingles are built to resist hail and debris, rated under the UL 2218 standard with Class 4 as the top grade. Jacksonville has far more wind exposure than hail risk, so the case here is mostly debris from oaks and pines in a storm, plus any credit your insurer offers. Ask your agent first; the premium difference varies by carrier, and some offer none.

They cost more per square than standard architectural lines, install the same way, and come from the same GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed families.

Three-tab replacement

Three-tab shingles are the flat, single-layer shingle on many older Jacksonville roofs, and they are a shrinking share of what suppliers stock. For a small repair on a three-tab roof we match the closest available product. For a reroof we price architectural, because that is what the supply shelves actually carry and it holds up better in wind.

The heavier shingle changes the look of the roof, with more shadow lines and texture, which is worth seeing on a sample board before you commit.

Every shingle roof we install follows the high-wind nailing pattern, so the real decision is whether impact rating is worth it for your house.

Roofing in Jacksonville

Why shingle dominates Jacksonville roofs, and what the heat does to it

Shingle is the working roof of this city. One large Jacksonville roofer reports that 82 percent of its installs are asphalt shingle, against 10 percent metal and 8 percent cement tile. The climate is what shortens their lives: the National Weather Service normal is 60 days at 90 degrees or hotter between June and August, and a dark roof in that sun runs far hotter than the air. That is why attic ventilation and underlayment matter as much as the shingle line you pick.

Timing

How long a shingle roof installation takes

Most residential shingle roofs in Jacksonville are done in one to two days. Steep pitches, two layers to tear off, heavy decking replacement and roofs with many valleys and dormers take longer. We tear off only what the crew can dry in before the afternoon storm window, so the house is never left open overnight, and the city's final inspection follows once the roof is complete.

We install and repair the lines Northeast Florida suppliers stock, from GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed shingles to Eagle concrete tile and Carlisle TPO.
